A Bainbridge man was found dead in his car Thursday morning at 8 a.m. and the cause of the crash is still unknown.
Officials investigating the case said loggers discovered Louis Cunningham, 55, in his Ford F-150 off the roadway on Pondtown Road Thursday morning and called 911.
“The loggers were driving by and saw a car off the road that had crashed into some trees,” Georgia State Patrol Corporal Kenneth Jones said. “They called 911 at about 8 a.m.”
There were no witnesses in the crash that officers say could have happened anytime between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday morning. Jones said Cunningham likely lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree.
“The last person that saw him said they saw him at 8 p.m. Wednesday night, so somewhere between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. (is when the crash occurred,)” Jones said.
Cunningham was not wearing a seatbelt.
“Based on road evidence, we believe (Cunningham) lost control of his vehicle,” Jones said. “He was traveling north on Pondtown Road, half a mile west of El Dorendo Road. He ran off the right side of the road and then he came back onto the road and lost control again and went off the right side into the woods.”
Because this area was a dirt road, winter road conditions are not considered to have been a factor in the crash. Autopsy results are not yet completed and investigators do not yet know if alcohol or any other factors contributed to the crash.
