Conyers honored at Savannah State University

Both Luther H. Conyers Jr. and his wife Gwendolyn Thompson Conyers were inducted into the 2015 Hall of Fame at Savannah State University on Saturday, August 29.
Gwendolyn was an honor graduate of what was then called Georgia State Industrial College, Class of 1948 with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. She is a past president and now serves as treasurer of the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chapter of the SSU Alumni Association.
She, along with her husband Luther, are co-sponsors of the $400,000 plus Conyers-Kirbo Endowed Scholarship Fund for SSU, which began in 2008 with a $100,000 gift from the Kirbo Foundation in honor of the 60th class reunion celebration.
Gwendolyn was nominated in recognition of her leadership as a chapter president.
Luther was honored in the distinguished service category. He too is a graduate of Georgia State Industrial College Class of 1948 with a B.S. Degree in Agriculture. He is a member of the original “BIG S” Club. He was chosen Alumnus of the Year in 1978 and again in 2009.
The Conyers family was chosen “SSU Family of the Year” in 2009.
Luther and Gwendolyn Conyers are parents of Audrey Conyers Rhodes and Luthenya Conyers Wright (SSU Class of ’76) and Grandparents to Leslie Wright Melline (SSU Class of 2008).
Both Mr. and Mrs. Conyers were teachers in the Decatur County Schools for many years, and are actively involved in civic and religious affiliations in the community.
