The Bainbridge High School ninth-grade Bearcats completed their season Monday with a 22-14 road loss to the Cairo High School ninth-grade Syrupmakers.
The loss gives the two teams a split on the season and the ninth-grade Bearcats finish their season with a 6-1 record.
On Sept. 14 at Centennial Field, quarterback B.J. Cheatem threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tevin McKay with 26 seconds left in the game to give the ninth-grade Bearcats a 14-8 victory over the ninth-grade Syrupmakers.
In Monday’s Syrupmakers win in Cairo, Bearcats running back Michael Stubbs ran 5 yards for a second-quarter touchdown to cut a 14-0 Syryupmakers lead to 14-6 at halftime.
Early in the fourth quarter, defensive tackle Brandon Crawford recovered a Syrupmakers fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. They made the two-point conversion to pull to within two at 16-14.
The Syrupmakers scored their final touchdown on a 50-yard run on the last play of the game.
Defensive line coach Brian McCorkle, who coaches the ninth-grade Bearcats with running backs coach Doug Pilcher, said he thought the team played well and progressed throughout the season.
“The kids had a good effort today, but we just fell a little short,” McCorkle said.
