Seniors Leanna Flowers and Whitney Thomas combined for five goals Friday night in Americus to lead the Bainbridge High School Lady Cats soccer team to a 6-0 win over the Americus-Sumter County Lady Panthers in its first region match of the season.
The Lady Cats, who are 6-0 overall, took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when Flowers took a breakaway pass from sophomore midfielder Charlton Reynolds, and calmly hit a shot from the right side of the 6-yard box into the net. The lead was still 1-0 at halftime.
Flowers’ next goal came four minutes into the second half and was the result of a great team play.
Senior midfielder Aubrie Provence lofted a free kick from 25 yards out in the center of the field to Thomas stationed in front of the goal. Thomas then flicked a pass to Flowers from 6 yards out.
Thomas scored the first of her two goals in the 59th minute on a breakaway shot in the center from 6 yards out. Provence got the assist on another lofted free kick.
Flowers wrapped up her three-goal hat trick in the 63rd minute when Reynolds slid a pass to her on the left side of the 6-yard box to set her up in scoring position.
Thomas made Bainbridge High School soccer history in the 66th minute when she scored her second goal of the match and the 47th of her career, breaking Crystal Roach’s record of 46 set in 2005-2006.
Flowers collected a Lady Panther punt just outside the penalty area and placed a through pass that set up the score.
The final goal was scored by Provence in the 72nd minute on a nicely placed lofted shot over the head of the goal keeper from the top of the penalty area.
