On Monday, a number of Bainbridge High School seniors received special recognition at the annual honors program held at the school’s new gymnasium.

With awards, honors and scholarships being presented, many parents and teachers looked on as their sons, daughters and students reaped the benefits of the hard work and determination they put forth throughout their high school careers.

During the program, Shelly Hinson, wife of the late John Hinson, principal of the Performance Learning Center, in which a scholarship is named in his honor, gave an emotional presentation of the scholarship in his honor.

At the end of the program, West Point appointees Erick Martinez Juarez and BHS 2009 graduate Derrick Akins. After a lengthy introduction by retired Lt. Col. David McClellan in what it means to be accepted into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., Juarez and Akins were given standing ovations.
