Charles Wesley Lewis

Religious services for Charles Wesley Lewis, 83, of Donalsonville, Ga., and formerly of Gordon, Ala., were held Tuesday, Jan. 11, at First Baptist Church in Gordon, Ala., with the Rev. Garner Wood officiating.

Burial followed at Shady Grove Cemetery in Pansey, Ala., with Jacob Lewis, John Michael Lewis, William Edward Sketoe Jr., Justin Lewis, Colby Sketoe, Robert Allen Jones and Bubba Vann as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Calob Sketoe, Ashley Peters and Tyler Peters.

Mr. Lewis was born on Nov. 22, 1927, and died Jan. 9, 2011, in Donalsonville. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force and National Guard and worked for the City of Gordon in the maintenance department. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gordon and American Legion Post No. 55 in Ashford, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Anthony and Vicey Tap Cook Lewis; his wife, Myrtle Irene Lewis, and five sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Wanda Witter of Donalsonville; four sons, Glenn Lewis and Samuel Lewis, both of Gordon, George Lewis of Mobile, Ala., and Charles Gregory Lindsey of Lynn Haven, Fla.; two step-daughters; two step-sons; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiregrass Hospice, 432 E. Shotwell St. Bainbridge, GA 39817.

Cox-Ware Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
