Bearcats shut out Patriots 4-0

The Bainbridge High School Bearcats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning here Friday and went on to shut out the Northside Columbus High School Patriots 4-0 in a Region 1AAAA game behind left-hander Marty Anderson.
The win improves the Bearcats overall record to 7-8. They are 1-4 in Region 1AAAA play and 0-2 in Region 1AAAA South Sub-Region play.
They will return to action Thursday when they take on the Dothan High School Tigers at 5 p.m. in Dothan, Ala.
On Friday they will travel to Leesburg for a Region 1AAAA South Sub-Region double-header against the Lee County High School Trojans. The first game will get underway at 5 p.m.
Shortstop Steven Bench and second baseman Sutton Reece opened the first with consecutive singles.
Catcher Drew Kelley had an RBI double in the first and right fielder Greg Lee and designated hitter Gunnar Griffin both had RBI singles.
Patriots third baseman Justin Chase singled up the middle in the top of the third but was erased when shortstop Grayson Dyer hit into a double play.
Kelley blasted a long solo home run in the bottom of the third that hit the scoreboard in deep right field accounting for the Bearcats fourth and final run.
Patriots designated hitter Hunter Mitchell singled to center with two outs in the top of the fourth.
Anderson then bore down to strike out second baseman Taylor Harper swinging to retire the side.
Bearcats first baseman Blake Voyles lined a single to center to open the bottom of the fifth before being stranded.
