With preseason nearing an end, NFL teams have recently had to cut down to a 53-man regular season roster, making moves that have hurt some former Bainbridge Bearcats playing pro football.

The San Diego Chargers cut Darryl Gamble from their roster. However, Gamble has been signed by the Washington Redskins to be a member of their practice squad. A spot on the practice squad could lead to a reactivation later in the season.

The Tennessee Titans cut three-year NFL veteran Malcolm Sheppard. Sheppard played his first season with the Houston Texans before being traded to the Titans. It’s unclear if Sheppard, who began his career as an undrafted free agent, will sign with another team.

Former Bearcat Ray Dominguez, who suffered a high ankle sprain at the Green Bay Packers’ training camp, has been placed on the team’s injured reserve list. This could mean he could be restored to the active roster if his injury heals and another roster spot frees up during the regular season.

Meanwhile, former Bearcat James Butler Jr., a member of the New York Giants, remains a unrestricted free agent. Butler played for the Giants from 2005-2007 and for the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2011. The Rams chose not to re-sign Butler in the off-season.
