The Bainbridge Middle School seventh-grade Bearcats completed a perfect 5-0 regular season, with a 28-14 Wednesday victory over the Washington Middle School seventh-grade Tigers at Cairo High School’s West Thomas Stadium.
They will now advance to the Wednesday, Oct. 24, Southwest Georgia Middle School seventh-grade championship game against second place Thomas County Middle School, at Centennial Field. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m. and admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for students.
The Bearcats took an early 8-0 lead over the Tigers on Wednesday, when running back Damian Pierce ran a sweep around the left side and broke loose for 80 yards and a touchdown on the first offensive play of the game. Quarterback Malique Pate ran up the middle for the two-point conversion.
Pierce ran off left tackle for 46 yards and a touchdown and Markel Broadnax ran off right tackle for the two-point conversion to open the second quarter scoring and increase the Bearcats’ lead to 16-0.
The Tigers cut the Bearcats’ halftime lead to 16-8 on a 34 yard touchdown pass and the two-point conversion.
The Bearcats scored the next two touchdowns, both on Pierce runs, to go up 28-8. First, he ran 9 yards up the middle for a third-quarter touchdown, and then 20 yards on a sweep around the right side for a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Broadnax ran in for the two-point conversion following the third-quarter touchdown, and an attempted two-point conversion pass by Pate was incomplete following the fourth-quarter touchdown.
The Tigers scored the final touchdown on a 51-yard fourth-quarter halfback pass. They tried to run outside to the right for the two-point conversion, but cornerback Mark Loeffler came up to stop the runner short.
