Bainbridge boys coach Rickey McCullough and girls coach Kelvin Cochran will both be on the staff of the Boys South Senior All-Stars, in Saturday’s Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) All-Star Basketball Showcase.
McCullough will be the head coach of the South team, and his assistants will be Cochran and Cairo head coach Isiah Chance. The South will face the North Senior All-Stars on Saturday at Armstrong State University, in Savannah, Ga.
“This is a great honor to have only been in Georgia for my seventh year, and be selected to coach this team,” said McCullough, who had been selected to coach Florida-based all-star teams earlier in his career.
McCullough said that most of the players on his squad have major college offers and there will be a lot of talent on the court Saturday. He and his coaches will arrive in Savannah on Thursday, practice twice with their team Friday, and play their game Saturday.
“It’s going to be a busy weekend,” he said.
McCullough said that his coaches would install some plays, but that the weekend was “more about the kids.”
“We’ll probably put in some simple stuff from the playbook, but this game is really more about the kids,” he said. “They got selected for this game and it’s a tremendous honor for them. We’re going to try and have some fun, and hopefully if it’s close at the end, the South will have enough to win.”
The players on the South roster include: Gary McGinty of Savannah Country Day, Frank Booker of Westside-Augusta, Jarquez Smith of Jones County, R.J. Sessions of Northside-Columbus, Anthony Bagtas of Westlake, Jordan Neff of North Cobb, Dray Souder of Vincent Rosser, Chukwudebem Okeke of Jonesboro, Eric Wortham of Eagles Landing Christian, Donell Tuff of Tift County, Jairus Holder of Mt. Zion-Jonesboro and Jovanté Spivey of Savannah.
