2013 National Safe Boating Week, May 18-24

The week of May 18-24 is recognized as National Safe Boating Week, and conservation rangers with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Division encourage those on the water to wear life jackets, file a float plan, stay sober and follow DNR regulations for safe boating.

During National Safe Boating Week, and throughout the boating season, the National Safe Boating Council is working with partner organizations, such as Georgia DNR, to encourage safe and responsible boating, including the practice of always wearing a life jacket, and being alert and aware while on the water.

U.S. Coast Guard nationwide statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2010, and that 88 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. That’s why boating safety advocates continue to push for increased and consistent life jacket wear on the water.

Georgia was one of nearly 60 applicants for grant monies from the National Safe Boating Council’s “Wear It!” campaign, and one of only 14 chosen.  Receipt of this $3,400 grant will allow DNR to produce supporting items, such as stand-up banners, plastic signs with the “Wear It!” logo, large custom banners and more.  These items will help Georgia conservation rangers promote safety during National Safe Boating Week and all year.
