Lady Cougars on the prowl for region championship

Coach Erwin Harrell’s Grace Christian Academy Lady Cougars volleyball team won two out of three recent matches to improve their overall record to 15-3.
The Lady Cougars, who are 8-1 in Georgia Independent Schools Association Region 2, downed the Aucilla Christian Academy Lady Warriors of Monticello, Florida, 3-0 Monday, Sept. 28, at Perry Memorial Gymnasium.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Lady Cougars traveled to Quincy Florida where they downed the Robert F. Munroe School Lady Bobcats 3-0.
The Lady Cats dropped a 3-0 match to the Northside Methodist School Lady Knights Thursday, Oct. 1 in Dothan, Alabama.
In their victory over Aucilla Christian, the Lady Cougars won the first set 25-11, won the second set 25-17 and won the third set 25-12. Against Robert F. Munroe they won the first set 25-13, won the second set 25-20 and won the third set 25-11,
In their loss to Northside Methodist, the Lady Cougars dropped the first set 15-25, dropped the second set 23-25 and dropped the third set 17-25.
Top performers for the Lady Cougars included Kelsey Harrell, who had 8 kills, 8 digs and a 100 percent serve percentage against Aucilla Christian and Robert F. Munroe, Kaitlyn Holcombe, who had 7 kills against Aucilla Christian and 5 kills gainst Robert F. Munroe, Lindsey Duke, who had 100 percent serve percentages against Aucilla Christian and Robert F. Munroe and 17 assists against Robert F. Munroe and 16 assists Aucilla Christian. Sarah Castoro had 12 digs against Aucilla Christian. McKenzie Brown had four blocks against Northside Methodist.
Coach Harrell says his Lady Cougars are still in contention for the Region 2 championship.
“We are currently second in the Region with our 8-1 record,” he said. “Valdosta’s School Lady Valiants are undefeated in the Region at 9-0.
Coach Harrell further pointed out that when the two teams play again Thursday in Valdosta, the tiebreaker would be the number of head-to-head sets.
“Valwood beat us in five sets Tuesday, Sept. 15, here so we need to beat them in three of four sets. If the sets are even, then a coin flip will decide first place.”
