Early Monday morning Bainbridge Public Safety investigator Mark Esquivel was dispatched to Walmart in connection with a shoplifting case.
The store reported that multiple pairs of headphones and a camouflage jacket had been stolen from the store. After watching the store surveillance video Esquivel identified the suspect as 17-year-old Demarquez Wimberly.
Wimberly was later spotted riding a bicycle on Tuesday afternoon by Esquivel and Investigators Chip Nix and Larry Funderburke at the intersection of Hall Street and Green Street.
“We got out and talked to him about the shoplifting,” Esquivel said. “I was placing him under arrest for the shoplifting and he started resisting.”
As they searched Wimberly the investigators found multiple bags of marijuana in his pocket.
“After we got him handcuffed he had some marijuana in his pocket,” Esquivel said. “He tried to swallow it so we stopped him from swallowing the marijuana.”
In all the investigators found five bags of marijuana in Wimberly’s possession along with extra bags and a digital scale used in the distribution of marijuana.
During the course of his arrest Wimberly stated that he had already sold the headphones on the street. He was still in possession of the jacket though.
“He was actually wearing the jacket when we arrested him,” Esquivel said.
Wimberly was charged with of Possession of Marijuana with the intent to sale, obstructing or hindering officers, and theft by shoplifting.
