Double figure performances by Tyra Smart, Nadia Marshall and Alexis Russ helped lead the Bainbridge High School Lady Cats to a 50-45 second round victory over the North Oconee High School Lady Titans in the State Tournament Friday in Bogart.
Smart led the way with 11 points. Marshall and Russ scored 10 apiece. Rounding out the Lady Cats’ scoring column were Asia Gordon with eight, Tytiana Roseborough with seven, and Kiara King with four.
“The young ladies hustled, played hard and really got after it on defense,” Head Coach Kelvin Cochran said about what led them to victory.
The Lady Titans were led by Emma Wynard with 15 and Camryn Williams with 12. Coach Cochran said he liked the stamina his team is showing in their state tournament run.
“This week it will be good to get three days of practice in at home before our state tournament game,” Cochran said. “We had long bus rides to Jonesboro and Bogart but they did not seem to affect us at all when we got on the court.”
The Lady Cats led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and 30-24 at halftime. They were outscored 8-5 in the third quarter and went to the fourth quarter with a tight 35-32 lead. They outscored their hosts 15-13 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.
The Lady Cats, who are 24-6 on the season, will play Jesup’s Wayne County High School Lady Yellow Jackets Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the third round of the State Class AAAA Tournament at Fort Valley State College. The Lady Yellow Jackets are 24-5 on the season and defeated Northwest Whitfield 42-38 in the second round. The Lady Cats are currently on a three game win streak and they have won four of their last five games overall.
