John Middleton Simmons

John Middleton Simmons passed away peacefully after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was born June 13, 1938 in Atlanta, Ga., the son of David Ramsay Simmons, Sr. and Ellen Carswell Simmons. John graduated from Bainbridge High School, Class of 1956. Upon graduation from Duke University in 1961, he assumed a leadership role at Elberta Crate and Box Co. in Bainbridge for 46 years. John was a strong advocate and supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, First United Methodist Church, Bainbridge Memorial Hospital, Andrew College, Gilbert Gragg Library, Bainbridge Rotary Club, Tall Timbers, and Samaritan Counseling Center.

He is survived by his wife Lesley Sevier Simmons; his three children, Ann Brannen (Hal), George Simmons (Lindi), and Tom Simmons (Laurie); his brother, Ramsay Simmons, Jr. (Peggy); his sister, Virginia Claire Murray (Ralph); Lesley’s sister, Susan Link (Jim); his seven grandchildren, Lesley, Major, John, Sam, Jack, Audrey, and Ella; and many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and their families.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Mablewood Personal Care Home where he was treated with dignity, love, and respect in his final years.

There will be a memorial service celebrating John’s life at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church in Bainbridge. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2016 at the home of Hal and Ann Brannen, 1036 Lake Douglas Road, Bainbridge, GA.
