Over a hundred athletes will converge on the Earl May Boat Basin for the first annual Sprint on the Flint triathlon. The athletes will compete in a 400-meter swim, 10-mile bike ride and then a 5-kilometer run. The race will start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning when the racers enter the water at the Boat Basin.
They will enter from a boat ramp into the basin and then exit the water from the same ramp.
The changeover from swimming to biking will take place in the parking lot near the basin.
The bikers will turn left onto Shotwell Street then take a right onto West Street. The course will continue west until the riders turn right onto County Club Road. They will head north before taking a right onto Hwy. 97 and following it back into the Boat Basin.
Racers will again changeover in the Boat Basin parking lot before running a 5K through the nature trail.
Many of the 120 competitors are from out of town, but Valaerie Faircloth, the assistant program director of the Recreation Authority, hopes that locals will come out and support the racers.
“I just want to see a lot of people,” Faircloth said.
Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers as well as the top relay finisher and awards for the top finisher in each age group.
They will also be giving out a Clydesdale Award for the top male finisher weighing between 200 and 220 pounds and am Athena Award for the top female finisher weighing between 145 and 160 pounds.
The event is sponsored by Little Caesars and each finisher will receive a free pizza. There will also be sponsors for each discipline and mile markers throughout the race.
Online registration for the race is open through Friday and race day registration will be available at the Boat Basin smokehouse.
