Bainbridge Bearcat tennis took to the courts again at home on Thursday, Feb. 16 against Dothan High. The Lady Cat’s continued their win streak while the boys struggled but showed signs of improvement.
The girls swept Dothan with ease. Their core group of experienced players proved to be the difference over an inexperienced Dothan team.
“Dothan has a really young team,” said Head Coach Amy Thomas. “Our girls just played really well.”
The match was not the normal six game set, the teams played 10 game pro sets, and the girls absolutely ran away with their matches.
The Lady Cats seemed unstoppable, with only one match being separated by less than five sets.
“The girls really want that region title this year,” said Coach Thomas. “I think this year they’ll be able to do that.”
The boys did not have as smooth of a night as the girls did. However, Coach Thomas is proud of the team. For most of the boys, this season is there first time starting so the early season matches are an adjustment for them, according to Coach Thomas.
The boy’s team lost 6-3 out of their matches, but showed signs of improvement.
Bainbridge won only one of the three doubles matches, and only two of the six singles matches were won by Bearcats.
Lawson Humphrey won his singles match 10-1, and Dalton Savage won his 10-1 as well.
One player that has improved according to Coach Thomas has been Hudson Barber. Barber battled back from being down in his match to tying at the end of regulation. He eventually lost in the tiebreaker, but his effort was impressive.
While the boy’s team still has some kinks to work out, their moving in the right direction with more and more experience coming after each match.
The teams take the court again on Wednesday, Feb. 22, against Houston Academy. The matches begin at 4:00 p.m.
