Bearcat track and field places first in region tournament, girls place fourth

The Bainbridge Bearcat track team showed a return to form last weekend as they took home the Region 1-AAAAA Championship trophy for the first time since 2014.
“We have missed (winning region) for the past couple years,” Coach Larry Clark said. “They worked hard and we are just excited about us having another region championship.”
The Lady Cats finished fourth at the meet featuring Bainbridge, Veterans, Thomas County Central, Warner Robins and Harris County.
Bearcat Jaylyn Scott was selected as the Region Meet MVP. He scored the most points in his events, coming in first in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and was a member of the winning 4-by-400-meter relay team and claimed fourth in the high jump.
“He is pretty good, and he’s got a chance to do well at state,” Clark said. “We have been blessed at Bainbridge with good hurdlers in the past, and he fits right in the mold. He’s just a junior. That’s the good thing about him.”
Other region winners include Thyra Jackson in the long jump, Rashad Odom in the high jump, Zyon McGee in the long and triple jump and Roman Harris in the discus.
The 4-by-400 relay team of La’Derrick Murphy, Vonderious Campbell, Rashad Odom and Jaylyn Scott won their event.
All the winners in each region tournament event along with the top four competitors in each event will advance to State Sectionals in Carrollton this Saturday.
These athletes include: Mabry-Grace Briggs, Aaron Lewis and Perry Sweet for the 800-meter run, Uriyah Davis, Hayden Griffin and Alexander Coleman in the 1600-meter run, Destiny Turner and Jaylyn Scott in the high jump, Ieasha Smart in the triple jump, Caron Baulkmon, Roman Harrison and Iran Brown in the shot put, JaMarvin Bouie in the 300-meter hurdles, Rashad Odom in the long jump and Iran Brown in the discus.
Other competitors include Tyaisha Gant and Rashad Odom in the 400-Meter Run; Uriyah Davis in the 3200-Meter Run; JaMarvin Bouie and Tykeia Campbell in the 300-Meter Hurdles; Tykeia Campbell and Amaia Taylor in the 100-Meter Hurdles; Vonderious Campbell in the 100 and 200-Meter Dash; Jovan Mims, Danis McMullen, Lance Cosby, Vonderious Campbell Tyiasha Gant, Cyan Gant, Tyisha Binyard, Thyra Jackson in the 4-by-100 Relay Races. Cyan Gant, Tyiasha Gant, Caitlin Miller, Makayla Cooper, Destiny Turner, Mabry-Grace Briggs and Joniash Kendrick in the 4-by-400 Meter Relay Races.
The top teams on the boy’s side were: Bainbridge, 181 points; Warner Robins, 144 points; Harris County, 114 points; Thomas County Central, 123 points; and Veterans 89.
The top teams on the girl’s side were: Veterans, 191 points, Thomas County Central, 142 points; Warner Robins, 134 points; Bainbridge, 123 points; Harris County, 27 points.
At Sectional on Saturday, the top four athletes in each of the 16 events from Regiona 1, 3, 6 and 7-AAAAA will be competing to determine the top eight performers that will advance to the State Meet in Carrollton May 11-13.
