Senior Caleb Boutwell signed a baseball scholarship to South Georgia State College on Tuesday among friends, family and coaches.
Boutwell said SGSC assistant coach Jerry Stuckey had coached him during summer ball on Team Elite for two years.
“I knew him and met the head coach before and I just liked the school,” Boutwell said. “I liked the location. The dorms were nice.”
Boutwell has a career batting average of .311 with 56 bats, 56 runs and 27 RBIs. He said he was recruited as a pitcher, but will also work on batting and outfield when he gets to SGSC.
“He is a high-energy, get-after-it, happy kind of guy,” Bainbridge coach Brian McCorkle said. “He is going to play hard and give you everything he’s got every time out. As long as he can continue to play that way, he’ll have all the success in the world.”
Boutwell’s parents, Rick and Jennifer, said they were proud of the work their son has put in to play baseball at the next level.
“We have put a lot of time in,” Jennifer said. South Georgia State has great academics. The coaches stay on top of the players, and we love their conditioning program for baseball. They are about development.”
Boutwell will continue his senior season as a Bearcat Friday against Veterans.
