The Georgia Junior Beef Futurity is a cattle show open to FFA and 4-H members across the state of Georgia. The show was held in Perry, Georgia, from Thursday, July 12, through Saturday July 14.
Taylor Barber is a senior FFA member at Bainbridge High School is the daughter of Jeff and Leslie Barber and older sister to Jake Barber. Taylor has been showing cattle for four years.
Showmanship was held on Friday, July 13. In showmanship class, the exhibitor is evaluated based on how well he or she handles their animal and how the animal and exhibitor articulate the showring in tandem. In addition, the judge can ask the exhibitor questions that relate to their animal and the beef industry. Friday was no bad omen for Taylor Barber as she beat out more than 60 competitors and was selected as the Top Senior Showman at the 2018 Georgia Junior Beef Futurity.
On Saturday, she exhibited two heifers, a Chianina (Chi) and a Maine Anjou. During the heifer show, the judge evaluates the animal on conformation, structural integrity, eye appeal and performance. During the Chi show, Taylor was named Grand Champion of the Breed. In addition, during the Maine Anjou show, she was selected as the Grand Champion of the Breed. These winnings allowed her to entered the ring and compete for the top honors of being selected as one of the Top 5 Overall heifers in the show.
Taylor was successful yet again and was selected as the 2018 Reserve Supreme Champion Overall with her Maine Anjou heifer.
“Entering the ring for the Supreme Champion drive was nerve racking but exhilarating and intense,” said Barber. “It’s moments like those that motivate me to work even harder at home.” FFA is very proud when its members have success with their Supervised Agricultural Experience projects.
