Bearcats, Lady Cats basketball heading to second round of state tourney

The Bainbridge Bearcat (16-13) and Lady Cat (14-15) basketball teams charged into the first round of the state playoffs last Friday, both coming up with wins and moving forward to the Sweet 16 round.
The Bearcats beat Riverdale (10-11) in a low-scoring battle 36-33 and the Lady Cats held down their home court with a 51-28 win over Jonesboro (12-14).
In double figures for the Bearcats was Lathan Levens with 11 points. Other scorers for the Bearcats were TJ Tarver with 8 points, KJ Cochran with 7 points, Dorrian Cooper with 4 points, Dewayne Kyles, Mark Taylor Jr. and Alvanni Williams with 2 points each.
In double figures for the Lady Cats were Taralyn Brown with 15 points and Destiny Turner with 11 points. Other scorers for the Lady Cats were India Parris with 9 points, Anndrea Porter with 8 points, Denise Chappell with 6 points and Taniah Register with 2 points.
Both the Bearcats and Lady Cats will hit the road on Wednesday for their next games. The boys will take on Columbia (17-11) and the girls will play Kell (29-0). Tipoff is 6 p.m. for both games.
