Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I realize it might be a little tacky for a sports writer to recommend the work of another publication. At the risk of coming off as some sort of advertisement, I feel strongly that fans who are out of the loop will thank me later. If you enjoy sports, and you are not a subscriber of The Athletic, it’s time to make a change.

On the surface, The Athletic is a lot like most other sports news websites. For an annual fee, readers can follow their favorite writers, teams and leagues. The home page is much like a social media feed, with your stories cultivated specifically for your tastes toward the top, and other recommended stories below it. What makes it different from every other sports news website is it is now a traffic-driven model—that is, they don’t rely on your clicks to make revenue. Writers can also take their time with stories, focusing on pieces for two to three days and releasing more thorough articles than they would have time to write at the other “Feed the beast” websites.

The Athletic, to drive the point home that quality reporting is king, has hired the best sports writers in the business. For Georgia fans who visit DawgNation.com, former writer Seth Emerson is on The Athletic’s UGA beat and he provides some really nice insight and reporting.

I can’t remember the last time I visited ESPN for news. I open my daily email from The Athletic every morning at 8 a.m. and read the news that’s important to me.

For those looking for a great Father’s Day gift, look no further!
