Carl Gustaf Chewning was born April 26, 1924 in Greenville, S.C., the son of Joseph & Daisy Chewning.  After high school, Carl proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from the end of World War II through the Korean War and into the Vietnam War. In 1967, with 22 ½ years of service in the USAF, Carl and Betty decided to put down roots in Panama City and begin a new adventure. Carl worked with US Civil Service until his retirement. His military background provided him with experiences and perspective that motivated him to serve others. Carl was an active Shriner and Mason, always doing good for his fellow man…another example of one from The Greatest Generation. His favorite “off duty” pastime was fishing with his best buddy and brother-in-law, Joe. Carl was Methodist by faith.

Survivors include his children, Carl G. Chewning, Jr. of Panama City, Fla., and Diana C. Parker of Madison, Ala.; his grandchildren, Paul & Lynn, Melanie & Jason, Carleton, and Tiffany & Chris; his great-grandchildren, Victoria, Alex, Zachary, Claire, Sophie, and Piper; and a host of extended family. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Griner Chewning; his son, Russell Chewning; and his siblings, Harold Chewning, Medici Chewning, and Betsey Hawkins.
