Joseph Ray Dodson was born February 19, 1947, in Bainbridge, Ga., the son of Tom & Eunice Sasser Dodson. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1966. Joe married Margaret Ann Middleton, who preceded him in death, and they raised their family in the Black Jack Community. Joe retired from BASF and was a member of Black Jack Baptist Church.
Joe was old school and believed family was the most important thing in this world. He didn’t just mean immediate family either. Joe was partial to anyone he could claim kin. His nature was to care for others, and no one knew this better than his brothers, his children and his grandchildren. Joe never missed an event; even after going blind he continued his support by attending events with his grandchildren. He had a strong work ethic and was always on the go. He shuttled kids and “supervised” their summer activities. Joe was active with Bainbridge Barracuda Swim Team and loved to fish, camp, and catch up with others at WalMart. His prized possession was a restored 1968 AirStream. Until just recently, Joe swam 1000 yards three days a week at the YMCA.
Survivors include his children, Jody Ray Dodson and his partner, Gerald Matthews, of Smyrna, GA, Melissa Wynn and her husband, Jamie of Bainbridge, and Candi Calderon and her husband, Matt, of Mexico Beach, FL; his grandchildren, Sarah-Kaylee, Koby, Miller, Carmen, and Mason-Margaret; his siblings, Phillip Dodson and his fiancé, May, of Port St. Joe, FL, Earl Dodson of Richmond, VA, and Gary Dodson and his wife, Cindy, of Bainbridge; and a host of extended family. In addition to his parents and his wife, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Faye Dodson.
Bryant Funeral Home, located at 105 N. Florida Street, is assisting the family with arrangements. (229-246-3321)
