Janet Virginia Godwin was born November 9, 1943, in Climax, Ga., the daughter of Milton & Mabel Kelly Godwin. She was a graduate of Climax High School, Class of 1961. Janet married the love of her life, William David “Billy” McQuaig, in 1962, and they made their home in Southwest GA/North Florida. She retired from the Florida Department of Highway Safety then worked part-time at Capital City Bank. Janet was Baptist by faith.
To the outside world, Janet appeared to be reserved. To her inner circle, she was lively and outgoing. Even though she was dedicated to her work, she treasured time with her family. Janet enjoyed cooking, and her famous fried chicken was a staple at these family gatherings. Sports and shopping were two favorite pastimes. If one of Janet’s grandchildren was playing, she was cheering them on. Gayfers and JCPenney (better known as Penney’s) were on the agenda when a sale was posted. Janet considered her children and grands her most valuable treasure.
Survivors include her children, David McQuaig (Wendy) of Chattahoochee, Fla., and Travis McQuaig (Brandi) of Tallahassee; her grandchildren, Hunter & Stefani, Cayden & Malori, Montana & Owen, Madyson, and Harley; her great-grandchild, Rylan; and her siblings, Monroe & Mary Ann Godwin of Bainbridge, Pat Bearden of Louisiana, and Earl & Gwen Godwin also of Bainbridge. In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Russell McQuaig; and her siblings, Donice Godwin & Doris Jacobs.
