677 passing yards. 155 rushing yards. 13 touchdowns. That is what senior quarterback Cam Sanders accomplished in region play this season — and why he earned the title of Region 1-4A Player of the Year.
Sanders amassed more than 800 scrimmage yards in just four games. He averaged 170 passing yards and 38 rushing yards per game, scoring around touchdowns 3 per game and completing 81% of his pass attempts.
Sanders’s best game was against Cairo in the final game of the regular season, where he scored six touchdowns. Sanders completed 17 of 21 pass attempts for 294 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 63 yards and a touchdown. On the rushing touchdown, his final score of the game, Sanders pointed his finger to the sky as he crossed the goal line.
“Before the game, my big brother told me to do it for my auntie,” Sanders said. “She’s passed, and I pointed up at the sky, ‘I’m doing this for you.’”
He did all of this in his first season as a starting quarterback for the Bearcats. Sanders sat behind Bo Smith in the 2022 season but got his chance to shine this year.
