Trey Henderson is now Grace Christian Academy’s lowest-scoring golfer ever.

Henderson shot a 78 through 18 holes at Bainbridge Country Club in a match against Southwest Georgia Academy. The Cougars won 335-350, helped by Henderson’s record-breaking day.

“When he made the turn, he wasn’t poised to do this,” said Cougars’ head coach Jeff Toole. “He shot really well on the backside to get to the 78.”

8th grader Henry Lee, who plays up on varsity, was right behind Henderson with an 80 on the course. His performance was another pivotal part of the Cougars’ success against what Toole said was a “fierce” Warriors team.

“Henry’s a solid player,” Toole said. “He has a great swing and a great attitude, and he works hard at his game.”

Toole said the biggest surprise of the day was Matthew Ryan. The freshman golfer broke a score of 100 for the first time ever, smashing the milestone by 11 with an 89 against SGA.

Ryan was shooting 50 after nine holes, then turned around and shot a 39 through 18.

“He was a star,” Toole said. “He made a remarkable improvement on his back nine.”

The Cougars got the win over the Warriors today and will have to face them again in the region playoffs. Toole said his team will need strong fundamentals to pull out another victory against SGA then.

“The difference today was our putting,” Toole said. “The greens where we play our region are going to be tough to put on, and we’re going to have to put well, that’s the major difference.”

Up next for the Cougars is an away match in Albany against Sherwood. The day tees off at 2 p.m. on April 9.
