It was a teary-eyed night in Bainbridge as the Ladycats fell to LaGrange High School 2-8 in the first round of the GHSA 4A state playoffs. The loss ends Bainbridge’s season.
Ladycats’ head coach Brian Hill said LaGrange was a “tough draw” for first-round opponent. The Lady Grangers come from one of the top regions in the state.
“We knew we had to play really well,” Hill said. “We played hard, it was just, you know, we got outplayed. Overall, it was a great year, I’m proud of everybody.”
Junior forward Addison Hill opened the scoring early in the first half. She scored a goal directly from a corner kick, curving her shot by the near post.
The Lady Grangers responded with seven goals unanswered before sophomore defender Lydia Bentley scored the Ladycats’ second goal from a corner kick midway through the second half.
LaGrange added one more goal to bring the game to its final 8-2 score.
Bainbridge entered the playoffs undefeated. The team amassed a 14-0-1 record over 15 regular season games.
Hill had a prolific season for the Ladycats. She ended the season with a single-season career-high 44 goals, averaging 2.75 per game and scoring a hat trick in 10 contests.
Hill broke the Bainbridge career goal record during the season. She surpassed the previous mark of 61 goals in a four-score effort against Brookwood School on Feb. 15. Hill finished the season at 95 career goals.
Senior midfielder Nicole Tyre led the team in assists, averaging 1.2 per game.
The team loses six seniors to graduation: Tyre, Carmen Martin, Elvira Hernandez, Julie Sarmiento, Dallis Thompson and Brenna Conley.
