Each year, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in the gifted program (QUEST) in Decatur County can participate in the Environmental Field Study at Camp Jekyll for 2 nights and 3 days. This is a tradition of our gifted program that has been in place for almost 20 years. Although class selections at camp will vary year-to-year, some mainstays are Beach, Maritime Forest, Marsh Ecology, Herpetology, Shark Dissection, Invasive Species Study, Dock Study, and Slough Specimen Study. Students become marine biologists, environmentalists, and researchers for the week and experience hands-on learning opportunities that reinforce classroom lessons authentically.
Brandi Deal, a Gifted Teacher at Elementary and Middle School, stated, “Camp Jekyll allows our gifted students to experience environmental science and biology authentically.”
