The state’s Department of Transportation (DOT) will fund improvements on more than 34.7 miles worth of Decatur County roads, County Public Works Director Dennis Medley said Tuesday.

Medley spoke to the Decatur County Board of Commissioners during their regular meeting Tuesday morning, and explained that the DOT had approved $96,000 in funding to improve portions of 12 county roads.

This funding is provided through the state’s Off-System Safety Project, at no cost to the county. The improvements are related to issues that improve the safety of motorists, and include enhanced traffic control items, such as centerline raised pavement marker installation, replacement of red series signs, advance warning signs, and installation of edge lines.

“Once we get a notice to proceed, we’ll put this project out for bid,” Medley said. “It is a wonderful program that allows us to get some work done on our roads at no cost to the county.”

The roads that are included in the project are portions of: Carl Cloud Road, Mars Hill Church Road, Eula Mills/New Hope Road, Attapulgus-Climax Road, Woodhull Road, John Sam Road, Hales Landing Road, Edwards Road, Wautauga Road, Phillips-Pope Road, Green Shade Road and Swicord Road.

Medley said the county also participated in the project last year, when it received $106,000 worth of improvements. He said the difference was primarily due to the inclusion of Booster Club Road, which is hilly and requires additional warning signage.
