Senior sprinter Rhyan Edwards of the Bainbridge High School Bearcats track team and junior Hilary Flournoy of the Lady Cats tennis team have been named All-Area by The Albany Herald.
Edwards finished seventh in the 400-meter run at the State Class AAAA Track meet, and helped lead the Bearcats’ 4-by-100-meter relay team to a third-place finish at state.
On the 4-by-100-meter relay team with Edwards were Terry Lewis, Justin Baker and Martrez Vickers.
Flournoy played No. 1 singles for coach Amy Thomas’s Lady Cats tennis team. She posted a team-best 14-2 record, a 4-1 Region 1-AAAA mark and advanced to the Elite 8 of the State Class AAAA Tournament.
Longtime Bearcats track coach Dr. Larry Clark said Edwards was a strong track performer all four years.
“Rhyan Edwards has been a great contibutor to all our track success, including the state championship we won in 2010,” Clark said.
“One of his top performances this year came at the Westover High School Invitational Meet on April 13 in Albany. He was on the first-place 4-by-100-meter relay team and was second in the 400-meter run, in a time of 49.65 seconds, and third in the 200-meter run, in a time of 22.5.”
Clark also praised Edwards for his outstanding team leadership.
“Rhyan grew into being a quality leader for our young track performers.” he said. “He is being recognized as being one of the top track performers in south Georgia, because of his great dedication, performance and work ethic.
“His times and performances improved each week and his leadership will certainly be missed.”
