Funeral services for Jimmie Hodge Timmons Jr. of Arlington, Ga., 71, will be held Friday, April 8, at 11 a.m. in the Arlington Baptist Church Dr. Gary Hadden and Rep. Gerald Greene officiating.
Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Arlington with Cliff Bailey, D.V.M., Robert Brownlee, Wilfred Cook, Scott Curry, Willis DuVall, Bo Earnest, Hal Haddock, Hank Jester, W.C. Kinard, Bobby Paul, Billy Peters, John Pritehett, Charlie Sheddrick, Paul Stapleton, Sonny Stapleton, Ronnie Walker and Mike Williams serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are the past and present members of the Georgia Legislative Assembly, Baker County Sportsman’s Supper Club and the Roy Stuart Sunday School Class.
Visitation will follow the service in the Arlington Baptist Social Hall.
Born on June 11, 1939, in Edison, Ga., to Lucille Daniels Timmons and Jimmie Hodge (Red) Timmons Sr., Mr. Timmons died at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, April 5, 2011.
Mr. Timmons was and had lived in Early and Calhoun counties all of his life. He attended school in Arlington and graduated from Damascus High School in 1956; Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) with an associate degree in 1958; University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education in 1960; Auburn University with a master’s in education in 1965; and the University of Georgia with a specialist degree in education administration in 1974.
Mr. Timmons’ education career began in 1960-1964 at Bainbridge High School as an ag teacher; 1964-1966 at Damascus Elementary School as principal; 1966-1998 in the Calhoun County School System as principal and Title I coordinator; and 1998-2001 as superintendent of Calhoun County School System, He served 40 years in public education.
Mr. Timmons served as state senator in the Georgia Legislature for District 11 from 1974 1992. He was past president of ABAC Alumni Association; past president and secretary of Arlington and Edison Lion’s Clubs; member of Calhoun Rifles Sons of Confederate Veterans Edison-Calhoun County Georgia; member of Demosthenian Literary Society of the University of Georgia; and an active member of the Arlington Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dr. Frank D. Timmons, and step-son Tommy Wooten Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Kavakos Timmons of Arlington; a brother, John S. Timmons of Arlington; two nephews, Frank (Wendy) Timmons of Columbus, Ga., and Jimmy (Tera) Timmons of West Point, Ga.; a niece, Elizabeth (Mason) Cartledge of Columbus, Ga.; sister-in-law, Betsy Timmons Kroepel and her daughter, Alex Kroepel, of Salem, Ala.; three step-children, Laura Sampson (John) Schewe of Athens, Ga., Bill (Angel) Sampson of Athens, Ga., and Glynda (Jerry) Nix of Jakin, Ga.; two grandchildren, Will and Mann Sampson; four great-nieces, Taylor, Emily, Betsy and Paige Tirnmons, and a great-nephew, Clayton Timmons; and a multitude of very special long-time friends and loved ones.
