Although the county’s new agriculture building is fully constructed and open for business, there is still one important detail left. The building needs a name.

County Administrator Gary Breedlove said at Tuesday’s meeting of the Decatur County Board of Commissioners that the building is legally required to have a unique name.

During public participation in the board meeting, Decatur County citizen Bert Stein requested if the building could be named for Tommy Wheeler. Wheeler was Decatur County’s county extension agent for many years, Stein said.

Breedlove said that Wheeler would be an excellent namesake, but thought it would be more fair to solicit additional possibilities as well.

“Mr. Wheeler would certainly be at the top of any list,” he said. “Not only for what he did for agriculture, but also for the great things he and his wife have done as citizens.”

Other possible names suggested by commissioners included Charlie Bailey and Marvin Rentz.

After some discussion, commissioners agreed that the naming nomination process should be opened up to citizens. Nominations will be closed July 23.

All Decatur County citizens are welcome to submit their recommendations. The person given this honor should be someone with ties to the agricultural community, and submissions should include a brief explanation of why that person would be a worthy namesake for the building. In addition, citizens must include their names and contact information.
