Bainbridge Leisure Services Department activities director Diane Atkinson expressed pleasure this week with the performances of city youth baseball and softball teams that recently completed tournament play.
“Our 11-and-12-year-old Midget Major All-Star baseball team finished fifth in a strong 10-team field, at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) State Tournament at our Bill Reynolds Sports Park,” she said.
“Key players in their tournament run included Wesley Morrow, Walt Burrell and Caleb Boutwell.”
Bainbridge’s 14-year-old and under All-Star baseball team won three games in their state tournament at home. They defeated Liberty County 8-3, edged Ware County 1-0 and defeated Cairo 10-4.
“We got some key hits from our 14-and-under players,” Atkinson said. “A.J. Jackson singled and came around to score the winning run against Ware County, and had a two run double against Cairo.
“First baseman Carson Inlow had a key RBI single in the victory over Liberty County.
“Our 14-year-old and under All-Star softball captured second in the district and third in the state,” Atkinson said. “The highlight of their season came when right hander Jeri Sloan pitched a 12-0 no-hitter against the Crisp County All-Stars in the District Tournament.”
“I was proud of all of our teams,” she said. “They represented the city well and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship.”
