Winston M. Rollins, the incumbent in the Decatur County Board of Election, District 3, seat, defeated challenger George Washington Jr. by 10 votes, in Tuesday’s runoff election.

Rollins finished with 127 votes (52.05 percent), while Washington had 117 votes (47.95 percent).

Doris White, chief elections official for the Decatur County Board of Elections, said there is still one outstanding provisional ballot, and it is from a voter in District 3. However, that one vote would not be enough to change Tuesday’s result, she said.

Rollins and Washington qualified for the runoff election by finishing with more votes than challenger Michele Miller, in the July 31 general primary.

In the only other contested race on Tuesday’s runoff election, Decatur County voters narrowly preferred Rick Allen over John House, in the race to determine the Republican candidate in the U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District, race.

With all nine precincts reporting, Allen had 68 votes while House had 48.
However, as of press time, with 34 percent of precincts reporting, House held a lead district-wide. House had 1,857 votes (55 percent) while Allen had 1,533 (45 percent).

The winner will face incumbent Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop in the November general election.

According to unofficial results from the Board of Elections, turnout was light. Just 2.51 percent of eligible county voters participated in Tuesday’s election — 350 out of the 13,954 eligible voters.
