A Bainbridge woman died Tuesday morning after her sport utility vehicle overturned on Georgia State Route 253 (Newton Highway) North, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The accident happened at 7:53 a.m., just north of Bainbridge city limits, near an area known as the “Sand Pits” off State Route 253, according to Sgt. First Class Marc Godby of the Georgia State Patrol’s Colquitt post.

Debra Watford Jones, 49, of Bainbridge, died as a result of injuries succumbed in the accident, according to the GSP.

Jones was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer northbound on the highway when she lost control of her vehicle and it ran off the highway’s eastern shoulder. Jones then over-corrected her steering, causing the Blazer to re-enter the roadway and subsequently overturn, Godby said.

Jones was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from her vehicle, Godby said. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Another vehicle was struck by the Blazer as it came to rest in the highway. However, it was not involved in causing the accident, Godby said.

Sheriff’s deputies, EMS personnel and county firefighters also responded to the accident.
