The Bainbridge Leisure Services Department’s 7-and-8 year old football team hosted the A, B and C division combined Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) football state playoffs, the last two weekends at Centennial Field.
The state championship was won by Lee County, who edged Bartow 7-6 Sunday, Dec. 9, in the championship game.
Divisons are determined by population and Bainbridge is in the “B” division.
Calhoun beat Bainbridge, 22-0, to win the 9-and-10-year-old championship at Thomson, in McDuffie County.
In the 7-and-8-year-old tournament at Centennial Field, Bainbridge advanced to the second round of the tournament before bowing out.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, in the tournament’s first round, Bainbridge beat Pierce County 19-6, Baldwin beat Macon 45-6, and Lee County beat Calhoun 19-7.
On Saturday, Dec. 8, Bartow beat Bainbridge 22-0, and Lee County beat Baldwin 26-0.
Leisure Services assistant athletic director Joanie Williams said she is very proud of the performances of the Bainbridge 7-and-8-year old and 9-and-10-year old teams.
“Our 7-and-8 year old players may have been small but they played with some of the biggest hearts,” she said. “It was a great weekend of sportsmanship and talent.
“Our 9-and-10 year olds did a great job on the road as well. We are very proud of all our boys for going so far this year. We also want to thank the coaches and parents for doing such a great job.”
