A Bainbridge man was hurt Friday evening after he fled from a police road safety checkpoint and his car crashed on U.S. 27 South, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Horace James Brown, 43, of Decatur County, was still at Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge on Monday afternoon, however, the State Patrol has taken warrants for his arrest, according to Sgt. First Class Marc Godby, commander of the GSP’s Colquitt, Ga, post.

Upon his release from the hospital, Brown will face multiple charges, including driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, according to Sgt. Godby.

The incident happened on Friday evening at about 6:40 p.m. on U.S. 27 near the highway’s intersection with Toole Dairy Road, just south of Bainbridge city limits.

State troopers from the GSP’s Colquitt and Thomasville posts were conducting a road safety checkpoint about a mile south of Toole Dairy Road, Trooper First Class Walt Landrum said.

Brown approached the checkpoint and after officers talked with the driver, they asked him to pull to the side of the road, Landrum said.

Instead, Brown allegedly sped up past the officers, headed north on U.S. 27 South. State troopers pursued the fleeing driver briefly and then forced his car off the eastern shoulder of the highway.

Brown’s car went into a ditch in front of a residence and struck a mailbox before coming to rest. Brown had visible cuts on him and was treated at the scene by Decatur County EMS before being taken to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge.
