The Sheriff’s Office is investigating a late Sunday night break-in at Bishop’s Travel Center, a convenience store located on U.S. 27 South near the Georgia/Florida border.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. Sunday night, Capt. Justin Bedwell and deputies Sam Hughes and Adam Mobley responded to Bishop’s Travel Center in reference to an alarm. Upon arrival, the deputies observed that the glass on one of the store’s front doors was broken out. Capt. Bedwell observed one of the cash registers was lying behind the counter and it appeared to be broken.

Deputies and the store’s owner reviewed the store’s video surveillance footage. Sheriff’s investigators looked for clues and processed the scene, looking for fingerprints.

Ultimately, it was discovered that a man had broken into the store, went behind the counter and took a bank bag that contained $2,500 in cash and $1,000 in non-activated gift cards. The suspect unsuccessfully tried to take a cash register, which he threw to the ground, and then pull on an ATM located near the store’s exit, before fleeing out of the broken door.

Based on the surveillance video, the description of the burglary suspect is a black male, who was wearing a gray, hooded jacket with blue and green or yellow highlights, blue jean shorts which hung below his knees, and sandal or flip-flop style shoes. He was also carrying a baseball bat, which he used to break the door glass.

Deputy Mobley told other officers that a suspect with a similar description of the Bishop’s burglar had recently broken into several businesses in Attapulgus.
