Mary Holland Duke

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Holland Duke, 88, of the Mingo Community, will be conducted, 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 in the Toomsboro United Methodist Church, with Rev. Billy Wicker, Rev. Jeff Alligood, and Rev. Mike Bankston Officiating
Mrs. Duke passed away, Dec. 15, 2013. She was a native of the Mingo Community near Toomsboro.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson “Jay” Holland and the late Lizzie Miller Holland.
Mrs. Duke earned her BS Degree in Home Economics at Berry College and taught in Odum, Ga. She returned to the University of Georgia to complete her Masters Degree where she met and married her husband, the late Clarence W. “CW” Duke. The Dukes made their home in the Mingo Community for the next 61 years.
Mrs. Duke was the principal of Toomsboro Elementary School before it was consolidated with the Wilkinson County Elementary in Irwinton. Mrs. Duke taught Home Economics at Boddie Jr. High School until she retired. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Duke was predeceased by her son, Dale Duke and her sister Ruby Jernigan.
Survivors include daughters Sandra Sallee of Cairo, Marsha Powers (Harold) of Mingo Community, Patti Duke of Toomsboro, Lisa Mathews of Macon; son Clarence A. (Cindy) Duke of Mingo Community; sister Judy Ann Howell of Tallahassee, Fla.; Caregivers Betty Jean Grimsley and Frank Coverson; 18 Grandchildren; 15 Great Grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
