Sophomore guard Tyree Crump scored 22 points Friday, combining for 33 points with Myles Thomas Saturday and leading the Bainbridge High School Bearcats to two consecutive weekend victories.
Crump’s 22 points for the Bearcats helped the team defeat the Harris County High School Tigers 70-57 in a Region 1-AAAAA game and on Saturday they defeated the Cairo High School Syrupmakers 61-46 as Thomas led the way with 17 points and Crump added 16 points.
The victories over Harris County and Cairo improved their record to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in Region 1-AAAAA play.
Friday, Crump hit a jumper with 2:14 left in the first quarter to give the Bearcats an early 8-2 Friday lead over the Tigers. Trevon Shaw’s layup off the right glass with 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter put them up 10-5 entering the second quarter.
After the Tigers cut the advantage to 12-10 in the second quarter, a jumper from the right side by Crump and a driving layup by Devonte Thomas at the 6:33 and 5:28 marks of the second quarter put them up 16-10.
Two free throws by Stephen Johnson with 59 seconds remaining in the second put them up 25-18 after three quarters.
They led by 10 points, up 43-33 after three quarters. Crump’s jumper from the left baseline with 6:18 showing on the fourth quarter clock increased the Bearcats’ advantage to 13 points at 48-35.  Another jumper by Crump with 5:22 left in the game put them up 53-37.
Crump’s 22 point performance was one three Bearcats double figure efforts against the Tigers. Stephen Johnson and Devonte Jones both put in 11 points.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 10-1 lead Saturday against Cairo’s Syrupmakers. Tyree put them up to stay 2-1 when he hit a jumper from the right side just 16 seconds into the game. Johnson followed with a left side jumper at the 7:21 mark to make it 4-1. They led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Syrupmakers cut the advantage to three at 22-19 late in the third quarter. Dominic Douglas grabbed a rebound and put it back in with 48 seconds left to keep the lead at three, 25-22, at halftime. They were up by 20 points at 46-26 entering the fourth quarter.
Coach Rickey McCullough said he thought his Bearcats played well Friday and Saturday.
“We moved the ball around well and took it strong to the basket both nights,” he said. “We also played solid defense.”
They traveled to Leesburg Tuesday for a Region 1-AAAAA game with the Lee County High School Trojans. Friday they will travel to Columbus for a Region 1AAAAA game with the Northside Columbus High School Patriots and Saturday they will play Columbus’s Hardaway High School Golden Hawks in their final Region 1-AAAAA and home game of the season.
