Two were killed in an accident on Interstate 10 in Florida Tuesday night, one of those victims a Bainbridge man.
According to Santa Rosa County officials, rain moved into the area, which resulted in a multi-vehicle pileup on the interstate, leaving two dead.
In an official accident report, the Florida State Patrol said four tractor-trailers and one vehicle pulling a U-haul trailer were involved in the crash, which occurred on the westbound lanes of I-10 at the crest of Blackwater Bridge.
During a chain of events, one tractor-trailer traveled over the concrete bridge rail and fell into the water below.
The report stated that weather conditions were deteriorating at the time of the crash.
When officials responded to the scene, there were two missing drivers that were possible fatalities in the water. Officials with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Marine Unite and Dive Team recovered one driver from the water the day after the crash, but searches for the second missing driver ceased until the morning because of worsening winter weather conditions.
The second driver was recovered the next day with the assistance of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office.
Donald Alexander, 49, of Bainbridge died in the crash. Alexander was the driver of a tractor trailer.
The crash is still under investigation. Family members of Alexander have been notified according to the report.
