Seventeen youngsters ranging in age from eight to 15 worked on the fundamentals of soccer Monday through Thursday at the at the annual Bainbridge Decatur County YMCA soccer camp.

YMCA CEO Adam Schrott instructed the kids on defense, passing, foot work and ball control.

“While we basically worked on fundamentals, we also talked about strategies of the game and what to do in certain situations,” Schrott said. “Our soccer program has really grown. We had 188 kids in our spring program.”

Each kid who took part in the camp received a T-shirt and a medal.

“With the World Cup going on right now in Brazil everyone is really excited about soccer,” Schrott said. “We had the World Cup in the United States in 1994 and I hope  we can have here again some time in the not to distant future. It really demonstrates a lot of excitement.”

Schrott pointed out that in past YMCA soccer camps, former Bainbridge High School Bearcats head soccer coach Jamie Ard and current Bainbridge High School Lady Cats head soccer coach Chip Ariail have been instructors.

“We really appreciate our high school coaches getting involved in our camps,” Schrott said. “This spring current Bearcats head soccer coach Mike Lewis led his team to a victory over Richmond Hill in an overtime shootout in the first round of the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA state playoffs.”
