A Decatur County man was shot and killed early Sunday morning outside Attapulgus.

Robert Cannon, Jr., 36, was found injured in a car by Decatur County deputies. Decatur County EMS arrived on the scene and began providing aid to Cannon, who passed away shortly thereafter.

According to an incident report, Cannon was sitting outside his sister’s residence in a vehicle when his sister heard four loud pops she described as “firecrackers.” When she looked outside, she saw a black male running away from the residence and heard cries from a friend, who was sitting outside with Cannon, to call 911.

“This group had had an ongoing series of incidences over the past few months,” Decatur County Undersheriff Wendell Cofer said.

Cofer said as far as he knew, this was the first instance of shooting between the two groups.

The case is currently under investigation.
