Bainbridge swimmers awarded at banquet

Coach Gretta Conner’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats swim teams celebrated their outstanding seasons Tuesday night at their annual awards banquet at the First United Methodist Churches J.O. Smith Activities Building.
The Bearcats won the Region 1-AAAA championship at the Region 1-AAAA Meet in Albany and the Lady Cats finished a strong second.
Coach Conner praised her teams for their outstanding work in the classroom as well as the pool.
“Twenty one of our swimmers had 90 or above grade point averages, and that is a credit to their strong work ethic,” she said.
The Lady Cats, led by Tara Stevens, defeated the Westover High School Lady Patriots 57-51 Tuesday, Jan. 27, to extend their winning streak to eight games. Stevens qualified for the State Class AAAA Meet at Georgia Tech in Atlanta in five events, the 100-yard backstroke, they 200-yard individual medley, the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle.
At the state meet swimmers are just allowed to compete in two events. At state she competed and placed in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.
She improved her Region 1-AAAA times in both events at the State Class AAAA Meet. She finished 20th in the state 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.54 20th in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:12.05.
Medals were distributed to numerous Bearcats and Lady Cats swimmers for strong performances at numerous meets.
