It is that time of year again – the time for National Honor Society induction. The National Honor Society (NHS) is the largest organization in the country that recognizes outstanding high school students. Each year, the students who qualify are invited to go through an application process and induction ceremony. It is a great accomplishment for a student to be invited to join NHS.
The NHS was founded in 1921 with the goals to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote leadership, and develop character in the inductees. Today, it is estimated that over one million high school students are members of the NHS in the United States.
Students received invitations to join the NHS last Friday at BHS. These students must be in tenth grade or higher and on track to graduate. They must hold at least a 90.0 grade point average (GPA) in their core classes and have a clear discipline record. The qualifications are in place to insure that inductees have presented exemplary behavior and efforts in their classes. After being invited, the students were required to return an application and resume to the school. The induction ceremony will finalize the student memberships on Tuesday, April 14 in the BHS cafeteria. “It is so rewarding to have had my NHS membership on my resume for the past two years. It represents my hard work throughout high school very well,” says Stephanie Mayfield, a senior at BHS.
BHS strives to increase the number of students in NHS each year and encourages all students that even as juniors and seniors it is never too late to qualify.
It is an honor for students to be invited to join the prestigious organization. Congratulations to those who have received an invitation this year.
