The 6th annual Track and Field Event for Decatur County Special Olympics students, originally schedule for last Friday, has been rescheduled due to the threat of rain.

The event will take place Thursday, May 7, at the Bainbridge High School track.

“At this moment, we are planning on everything to be rescheduled,” event organizer Jim Beck said. “Everything should be the same, and we are looking forward to it being warmer.”

Participants from Early, Seminole and Grady counties will be in attendance. There are expected to be 113 students, each with their own volunteer.

At 8:30 a.m. participating students will leave the DMV parking lot traveling by bus to the high school, escorted by local law enforcement.  High school students will line up from inside the gated entrance to the track, welcoming the Special Olympics students.

Dr. Pat Harrell, former Leadership Committee chairperson, will lead in the opening ceremony at 9 a.m.  Members of the BHS ROTC and Band will participate.

The Post Searchlight publisher Jeff Findley will be the honorary torchbearer and lead the torch run supported by local law enforcement.

Participants will compete in various events such as softball throw, relay, and long jump. Each participant will be recognized with a ribbon, with the day’s event concluding around noon.

All Special Olympics events are made possible through monetary donations and various services volunteered by community members and civic organizations.

Beck said they are looking into the possibility of having the Special Olympics Track and Field event relocated to the BHS gym or BMS Coliseum in future years if there is a possibility of rain in the forecast.
