Dr. Edward D. Mobley

Dr. Edward D. Mobley, President Emeritus of Bainbridge College, 82, Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at his residence.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gerald A. Little officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Dr. Mobley was born July 1, 1932 in Rome, Georgia, the son of Curtis and Mary Mobley. Dr. Mobley served as founding President of what is now Bainbridge State College, a position he would hold for 25 years.

Always having a love of music Dr. Mobley entered the United States Marine Corps at age 15, to play in the Marine Corps Band. After getting his Bachelors degree at the University of Georgia. He returned to service as an officer with the 2nd Armored Division of the United States Army. After leaving active duty he earned his Masters degree at the University of Georgia and would later earn his Phd. in Music Education from Florida State University. He continued his life long love of learning with post-graduate study at Harvard University and German language study at The Goethe Institute in Germany.

Dr. Mobley served as the Academic Dean at Dalton Jr. College as well as the director of the Creative Arts Guild of Dalton, before coming to Bainbridge to “build a college in the middle of a swamp”. Dr. Mobley loved not only Bainbridge Junior College, but he loved Bainbridge. He was the founding Director of the Bainbridge British Brass Band, played a large part in establishing Bainbridge Little Theatre, as well as playing percussion in dozens of shows, and was instrumental in the formation of Artsfest. He loved nature and the arts and could always be found giving back to his community and encouraging people of all backgrounds to continue their educations and studies.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Martha and his daughter, Laurel, both of Bainbridge, GA.
