Letter to the Editor: Southwest Georgia is God’s country

Often I am asked by friends outside the Southwest Georgia area what makes it so special. Recently I had an encounter that answered that question.
One of our employees had broken down on the way home between Vada and Hopeful. They had blown a tire, hydroplaned and landed in a ditch. It was pretty late at night and by the time I could help my wife get the babies down it was almost 8 o’clock. I grabbed my lugwrench, jack, and hoped for the best.
By the time I got there, Greg Hayes and some friends had already stopped to help. When I got out of the truck he immediately said “Mulholland!” and proceeded to go to work. Greg had taken the spare tire to the vehicle and aired it up at their shop. He then returned and we (mainly them) were able to put the spare on and get the truck out of the ditch.
Without their help it would have taken me at least an hour or two to get the truck back on the road. Knowing I had court the next day I would have been exhausted. Needless to say the next day I was very grateful for their help.
Certainly our community has problems and issues. However, I cannot think of another place where individuals like Greg and his friends would stop and help someone they didn’t know in a tight situation.
Thanks Greg and friends, for reminding me how lucky I am to live in God’s Country with people who still have the morals and values I hope my sons grow up with.
Joe Mulholland
