Bainbridge-Decatur County YMCA CEO Kevin Angell will be exclusively officiating Gulf South Conference college football games this season
For the past 20 seasons, he has officiated both high school and college games.
As a member of the high school All Star Football Officials Association, he officiated high school games in both the Georgia High School Association and the Georgia Independent Schools Athletic Association.
Schools in the Gulf South Conference include Valdosta State, West Georgia, Shorter, West Alabama, North Alabama, Delta State and West Florida.
Angell says he is looking forward to exclusively officiating college games this fall.
“On most crews, I will be the back judge,” he said. “At Bainbridge High School I played end under Bearcats head football coaches Miller Shealy, Jimmy Hightower and Ralph Jones. I was also on the high school swim team, coahed by Mike Jones and Charley Kirbo, and the high school baseball team under coach Stan Killough. I played both infield and outfield on the baseball team.”
Angell received an Associate of Arts Degree from Bainbridge State College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in education from Georgia Southwestern University in Americus.
Angell and his wife Suzanne have a 17-year-old daughter, Sara, who will be a senior at Bainbridge High School this fall. He and his wife both run in various local races.
“My wife is a much better runner than I am,” he said with a smile. “She and my daughter are my biggest supporters.”
College coaches, for the most part, really don’t give officials a very hard time,” Angell said. “They might get upset about a few things, but I understand that there is a lot of pressure on them to win. They understand that officiating is also not an easy job.”
